With the advent of FSX, the new terrain engine has been significantly enhanced. Not only are higher resolutions available, FSX also introduced a multi-LOD format that has eliminated the previous need for separate LOD files to enable a more gradual transition out to the horizon. All LODs may now be contained in the same file, negating the previously abrupt transitions at LOD display boundaries.
The new terrain engine also allows more control over the compression algorithms during the compiling process with only some slight deterioration of the visual display. Due to the very large file sizes, FSGenesis has adopted two different versions of the United States 9.6m FSX terrain mesh product. Downloadable files for the FSX contiguuous US have been compiled with a slightly higher compression ratio than the files distributed via DVD media. While the visual display may be very slightly compromised in the download versions, the file sizes are considerably smaller which facilitates downloading and saves on bandwidth and throughput.
We currently offer worldwide coverage compiled from the latest, best-available digital elevation models from the United States Geological Survey, NRCAN, INEGI and SRTM source data, as well as Jonathan De Ferranti's enhanced SRTM with voids filled with custom-made data derived from Russian topogrpahic maps, so detail and accuracy are ensured. All are available via immediate download, and optional DVD media shipped free worldwide.
